Cahan's most recent series of photographs is entitled Color Theory: Sky. Influenced by the work of Agnes Martin, James Turrell, and Mark Rothko, these photographic abstractions are created by an intricate and painstaking process. In each photograph, Cahan captures both the dramatic and subtle changes of light at sunrise and sunset, and heightens the color saturation with the use of multiple cameras and filters. Similarly, the chromium printing of each photograph involves an obsessive attention to detail. Cahan will reprint the image as many times as necessary until the final rendering is seamless, without striations or blemishes. The result is something beyond technical description, evoking the emotion and presence of nature at its most sublime. As described by the artist: "The pictures I make only exist on the paper surface. I try to capture an unseen or rarely witnessed element in nature, hoping to lift the spirit and empower the viewer. I want the viewer to be drawn into this world, and be, for a time, completely absorbed in rather than separate from the image."
