This Neapolitan Neoclassical stool retains its original green painted and gilded decoration as well as its original needlepoint upholstered top with a flowering urn and period nail heads and fringe. By tradition, this stool was purchased by Willcox and his wife, Esther Jenkins Willcox, in post-war Europe. An archetypal American gentleman, Westmore Willcox was born into an old Virginia family. He graduated from Harvard in 1917, became at member of the Council on Foreign Relations in 1929, served as head of ECA Mission in Vienna from 1949 as part of the Marshall Plan.
