This fine French table, in the transitional style between the rococo Louis XV and the neoclassical Louis XVI tastes, is the work of Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas, who became a maître ébéniste in 1766. Made of finely grained mahogany with inset white marble top and a wooden shelf, this table has cabriole legs with gilded bronze mounts. The wooden underside of the top is stamped Canabas JME. Joseph Canabas was perhaps the first Parisian master craftsman to specialize in solid mahogany furniture, mostly small and functional pieces, such as this table, devoid of exaggerated ornamentation or mounts, all to emphasize the inherent beauty of the wood.
