Banquet Table in the Arts and Crafts Taste
Japan, circa 1910-1920
Keyaki (zelkova) wood
H: 31 3/4 W: 71 1/2 D: 35 1/ inches

#JF001266

This unusual Japanese long table, made of keyaki hardwood, has a plain plank top with stylized chrysanthemum and rising sun carvings on the apron, raised on four legs with diminishing block carved decoration, joined at the top by openwork galleries beneath the apron. The underside of the top and base are inscribed with Japanese characters for banquet, denoting the use of the table. The style of this table combines traditional Japanese decorative elements and Korean furniture forms with a distinct influence from the European Arts and Crafts movement, and therefore places this table within the Mingei (Folks Craft) movement in Japan.
